A Winter Day

This morning is grey, and the forecast has promised rain. From where I’m sitting, I can hear the clicking of the tallow seeds on the woodshed roof. The twenty eights have been an almost permanent fixture in the tree this past week, but will disappear as soon as the first drops begin to fall, and stay away until it stops.

This type of weather induces an air of calm in the house. It is a day for nesting; a dim, slow, dreamy day.

I'm hoping this calm will extend to my latest knitting foray. Short and sweet both in style and labour.... or so I thought.

Today, for the third time, I will be attempting to get the collar on this jacket right, and I hate having to do things twice, let alone three times! I have finished this part of the project twice; cast the stitches and everything, only to find that the garment was twisted, somehow knitted back to front, I don’t know, just wrong. The second time this happened I left it, couldn't face undoing it again, and started on the sleeves. They're finished now, so the only thing left to do is the collar... again. So today I am calmly and slowly 'unknitting' the collar, stitch by stitch, row by row. (Well, as calmly as I can whilst trying to keep Bertie away from the yarn he has spied).

Hopefully, this third time really will be lucky and I'll get it right.

A June Find

As we edge towards winter solstice, every movement in the air brings a flurry of leaves from our trees.  They are beautiful and everywhere, including I have no doubt the gutters,  a seasonal cleaning job for the weekend and probably the one after that.

Our ‘rescue’ grapevine is just beginning to look seasonally bare. I think the unusual warm weather we’ve had this June may have confused it a little, as along with the last of this year’s withering leaves, there are a few tiny new green ones already appearing on some of the stems.

I’ve never been really sure when to prune the grapevine, but am glad I haven’t done it yet, as I found this little guy hugging one of the old leaves.

I have no idea what he is or will become but I’m going to keep an eye on him and will hopefully see the end result.
