After years of talking
about it, planning and saving, and more talking about it, we are finally
getting a new carport.
The old one was
actually two constructions; this free standing timber carport closest to the
street, and a steel structure behind, which was attached to the wall of the
house, and spanned the area between it and the fence. Pre stage one
renovation which was more than a few years ago now, the steel carport actually extended all the way down to the
backyard.
Both structures had major problems. The roof
of the timber carport was lower than the house (it actually protruded onto the
verandah around head height), and had no gutters. The slightest shower of rain saw torrents of
water pouring onto our verandah on one side, and onto our neighbour’s wall on
the other (not good when the bricks are more than a century old). The steel
structure behind had gutters, well the remnants of gutters, as they were long
rusted through. Actually, the whole thing was so full of rust, it was becoming structurally
unsound.
Anyway, demolition fell to us. SP took a day off work, and
with a little help from moi, deconstructed them both. With the old metal
carport gone, we were also able to finally remove the last sheet of asbestos that once
clad the entire house. It might be slow going, but we're getting there...
